MAKE-UP ESSENTIALS 101: BUYING

Hello Candies!

It's been such a long time that I've posted in this blog.

This blog is dedicated only for beauty and for beauty alone.

So the last blog post I did was about EOS lip balm last December if I'm not wrong. Even before that post, I have collected over time tons of make which I've yet to show you.

Anyhows, before 2012 ended, I've managed to haul more make-ups than ever before. Some some are drugstore brands while my newest add on to my collection are probably by far my most favorite when we talk about brand. Yeah, MAC is well known. And their products are great! Maybe not all are great but most are great. But, since discovering this brand, I've been longing and been doing more on line shopping.

Most of my friends are always amazed by my make-up. Not just on how I wear them but because due to the nature of my job, freaking sweating like mad dog to drenched in heavy rain, but my make-up still stays on just as if I just put them on. "WATERPROOF & WEATHER PROOF"..

Girls, the only advice I can give you in terms of make-up is that "INVEST IN GOOD PRODUCTS".

Price may vary, brands may vary but nonetheless, make sure that before purchasing any make-up, research on the product first. Or do window shopping before buying. this will help you save the time and probably the disappointment(s) that you'll probably have if you don't like the product.

DO NOT BUY CHEAP MAKE-UPS. I'm not saying that cheap is not good. There are definitely cheap stuffs like those drugstore make-ups which are good. An example is Maybeline, Loréal, Bourjois, Sleek and many more. These are cheap but good make-up brands. Probably in other countries they don't come cheap. But what I'm saying is, DON'T BUY CHEAP PRODUCTS THAT YOU'VE NEVER HEARD BEFORE especially like the ones that say "Made in China". Japanese & Korean make-up brands are great too! Sorry, but I don't trust those that says "Made in China".

Usually what I do if I'm buying make-up at the store is this:

Say, I go to SEPHORA, every Sephora outlet have beauty counters where all the product testers are laid out. TRY THEM!!! BUT! DO NOT TRY THEM ON YOUR FACE.. Here's what I do.

  • Go to the beauty counter. Ask the artist questions about the brand. Tell her what kind of make-up you're looking for. Be specific. Remember, she/he's a professional make-up artist and she/he knows the product well. She/he knows the craft. And she/he knows your face type. They will do a test on your face. Remember every face has different type. Are you the oily face type? Are you the dry face type? The artist will advise you what you need and what NOT to use.

  • This is important, DO NOT USE THE TESTER ON YOUR FACE. That tester has been probably lying there for weeks, months or probably years? Every make-up has a shelf life. For example, MASCARA has a shelf life of 3 months once opened. So after 3 months, it's time to throw that mascara and get a new one. Reason being??? That's because you are putting mascara on the most sensitive part of your face, your EYES! From the constant usage of the mascara, opening, applying, and closing, air goes into the tube thus No.1. DRYING UP THE MASCARA. You do not want to use dried mascara! It is harmful to the eyes. No.2. you're applying it unto your eyes and thus you are prone to bacterial transfer. If you go to any store which has mascara tester, you'll notice that most of the mascara testers are dry. No.3. DO NOT SHARE MASCARA. Sharing means susceptible to bacterial transfer which may harm your eyes. So, how you test make-ups in beauty stores? Use the back of your hand as your canvas. The back of your hand is the closest skin color to your face. Feel the make-up. You will instantly notice the texture of the make-up. Like it? Buy it. Don't like it? Leave it & move on. This applies to all kinds of make-up. From foundation to eye shadow to lipstick and so on. As for Mascara, the first thing you need to check is the wand. Is it too thick too thin, long bristle, and blah blah blah...

  • Take your time in shopping. Doesn't mean that a brand is well known, the brand is good. Honestly, some brands are just over rated and expensive! If you do not have the budget then go for drugstore brands. They're equally good and yet cheaper! Again, research comes in and product testing. Some expensive brands, although they do sell great product, long lasting and such, some of their products just sucks. Great ads, over rated reviews by some, and so just coz you've seen and read doesn't mean it's good. Remember, you have to get your hands on the products first and check them out first hand before paying. Some high end brands such as Chanel  or Armani or even MAC may have the same product color as drugstore brands which are equally great but price difference is staggering. So consider your options! A great example of High End VS Drugstore is the Armani Eyes To Kill, Maybelline 24/7 Eye Studio Color Tattoo and the Loréal Infaillible. All 3 products are the same. Texture wise, quality wise, not to mention packaging wise! Although Loréal differs. These product are what we so call "hybrid" in the newest trend of cosmetology. Not a gel, not a cream & not a powder, It's the best of both worlds. All 3 are long lasting most especially the Maybelline. Smooth texture, color pigmentation is amazing and yet Armani retails at USD33.00 on their website whereas Loréal and Maybelline are playing at USD7.00! See the price difference?! The only thing that's different is that, Armani is ARMANI. In close line with the high end circle such as Chanel, YSL, Lancôme and so on... It's the BRAND you're paying for! So think about it. you could save big bucks by researching and by being smart!
PICTURES TAKEN FROM THE LORÉAL, ARMANI & MAYBELLINE WEBSITE.

So those are my tips for window shopping. Now, online shopping however are different. Basically coz you can't test the product first hand. This can be tricky. BUT, if you know the product well and research about the brand and specific product you wanna buy and if you're comfortable about the product then by all means, go ahead!

My first online shopping for make-up was COASTAL SCENTS. Before I shopped, I made sure that I've researched all about the product and watched reviews from many YouTube beauty gurus. There's tons of beauty gurus on YouTube and they are honest in their reviews. So from there you can get infos about the products. Let me give you some YouTube gurus of mine, maybe you girls can check them out and learn tips & tricks from them.

  1. MISSCHIEVOUS
  2. NIKKIE TUTORIALS
  3. PIXIWOO
  4. GOSSMAKEUPARTIST
  5. LISA ELDRIDGE
Go check them out! They are my top 5 make-up artists. And I've learned a lot from them especially from Julia (Misschievous). Wayne (Gossmakeupartist) is the most brutally honest when it comes to reviews. All 5 artists are professional make-up artists.

So from my first online shopping came a few more. I have been addicted to ILLAMASQUA. It is a UK based brand. Not with the class of Chanél or YSL but not with the class of Loréal or Maybelline. Illamasqua is a "High Street" brand. Together in this circle are brands such as URBAN DECAY whereby the most celebrated creation they have is the NAKED PALETTEMAKE-UP FOREVERNARS whereby their most celebrated product is the NARS ORGASM BLUSH, and so on....

The reason why I love Illamasqua is that they're so unique. They're not over rated and not pricey unlike MAC and yet their product payoffs are spectacular. They defy the norms of the make-up industry and embraces imperfections unlike most brands whereby they want perfection. Illamasqua has extreme make-up artistry with their Creative Director Alex Box leading the team, to share make-up tips and tricks in their Masterclasses held at their Beak Street flagship store and Leeds Victoria Quarter. You can check this link to know more about the ILLAMASQUA ART TEAM. They also have collections like my favorite collections among all are the ART OF DARKNESS & THEATRE OF THE NAMELESS collections. And see what the Creative Director Alex Box has done for the collection. I am forever amazed by her and would really very much would love to be her progeny!

Okay, I am not promoting Illamasqua and I am not paid to do it too. It is just my honest opinion that their products are really good. My last 2012 haul was from Illamasqua.

Next point here is when doing your make-up it is important to invest in really good brushes. There are synthetic brushes and natural brushes.

Just an over view;
SYNTHETIC vs NATURAL

  • Synthetic brushes are man-made brushes while Natural brushes are from animal hairs.
  • Natural brushes are much more expensive than synthetic brushes.
  • Natural brushes holds on more products such as powders, pigments and stuff than synthetic brushes.
  • Natural brushes hold their shapes more better than synthetic brushes.
So those were the difference. Whichever brush you prefer to use is fine as long as it's a good brush. And by good, what I mean is not just about the brand but the quality of the brushes too! The best brush there is in my opinion is HAKUHODO Brushes from Japan. But they are not cheap! But you don't have to buy Hakuhodo just to get good make-up effect. For those interested check out this LINK.

There are other quality brushes too that are affordable like REAL TECHNIQUES by Samantha Chapman from Pixiwoo. MAC also do quality brushes but be warned, not all brushes from MAC are good, there are certain brushes that are really good for a certain make-up.

It is important to have quality brushes. Not all brushes are of the same quality, that is a no brainer one! The reason being for having a good brush is because your face is sensitive especially the eye area. Using rough brushes will irritate your skin. The brush picks up, hold the make-up and transfers the make-up to your face. Bad brushes picks up so much product, holds up so much product but transfers less product. And that is a complete waste of money.

In the end, it is important that before buying a brush, try to feel them on your hand. NOT ON YOUR FACE. If you feel comfortable with how the brush feels on your skin then that may be the brush for you!

But to sum it up, INVEST IN QUALITY BRUSHES! Bad brush, Bad make-up!

I admit, I do spend a lot of money just on my make-up. They're my babies! I have this whole drawer full of make-up. I don't use them all at the same time but it gives me a great sense of pleasure to just open up my drawer, grab any random palette, open it up and I'd still be able to slap on colors to my face.

I do have some favorite buys from my collection. And some regrets too. But somehow, what I so with the regrets is take them out from where I hid them, use them, and build a new look. Maybe the first time I didn't like them coz I used different color combination, or maybe my lips was too dry & chapped, or my face was too dry, or I've forgotten to use primer and blah blah blah. There could be a number of excuses, but, think about it. You've paid for this product. Maybe this product needs a second chance. Maybe this product needs to be discovered by you. And maybe this product just needs some loving from YOU.  Sometimes, it does work. But if you really don't like the product, well, you can do whatever you want with it.

This post is me not to brag about the amount of make-up I have collected (although I could). Haha. I just wanna share with you people my tips.

I could post every make-up I have on my drawer right now and a sample of looks that I've done but I'm just too lazy to upload and find those picture. So, maybe you can check them out on my FB.

Till here Candies! Cherios!

LIP SMACKER HAUL

Hi!

It has been a very long time. Sorry!

Anyways, it's the Christmas Holiday now! December is a few days away so I went out a few days ago to hunt for something for the girls and I found and hauled these babies: Paul Frank Lip Smackers!
For the longest time I've been using EOS Lip Balm which I totally adore! My personal favorite is the EOS Honeydew Lip Balm flavor which is totally awesome! But I'm not really the type that keep on re-touches my lips whenever I need to. I am so used to putting on make-up only once and since my make-up really stays on the entire day I don't touch up at all. That's the good thing about paying more for make-up brands coz the quality just lives up not just to its name but for its price as well. So most of the time I only apply my lip balm right after shower in the morning and before going to bed at night.

And by far my EOS has never failed in giving my lips the moisture that it needs. But now, my EOS has been out, so I don't have that moisturizer my lips needed for the longest time now thus I had cracked lips (due to the weather) and I've long time never did my usual lip scrub just so coz I was feeling lazy.

Anyways, point is, LIP SMACKERS ARE AWESOME!!! The day after I used Lip Smacker, particularly Paul Frank, my lips felt so moisturized, soft and I don't have that dead skin peeling off from my lips which I usually have since the day I ran out of EOS.

Brief Overview of the Lip Smackers:

Lip Smackers are products from The Bonne Bell Company which was founded since 1927 by cosmetic salesman Jesse Bell who named the company after his daughter. The target market for this company are young women.

In 1973 Bonne Bell introduced the flavored lip pomade called "Lip Smackers" which aimed the pre-teen market. The first flavor created was Strawberry which was followed by Watermelon and Vanilla and so on.

Bonne Bell has partnered Lip Smackers with other confectionary brands such as Coca-Cola, Dr. Pepper, Mars, Kraft and also partnered with Disney, Paul Frank and many more.

Ingredients:
http://www.thebonnebellcompany.com/faq.html
Castor oil - A natural oil obtained from the seeds of Ricinus Communis. This ingredient gives emolliency and gloss to the lips.

Beeswax - A natural purified wax obtained from the honeycomb of the bee, Apis Mellifera. This ingredient gives structure and rigidity to Lip Smackers.

Cetyl Acetate - This is an ester of cetyl alcohol and acetic acid. This ingredient gives emollience and gloss to the lips. It is also a conditioner of dry, chapped lips.

Candelilla Wax - A natural wax obtained from various plant species of Euphoriaceae.

Flavor/Fragrance - These are comprised of both natural and artificial ingredients, all of which are GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) for use in cosmetic and food products. These ingredients give Lip Smackers their characteristic flavor and aroma.

Polybutene - A polymer which is made up of a mixture of butenes. This ingredient adds gloss and wearability to the product.

Sesame Oil - A natural oil obtained from the seeds of Sesamim Indicum. This ingredient adds gloss and emolliency.

Ozokerite - A wax derived from mineral or petroleum sources. This ingredient adds rigidity and structure to the product.

Carnauba - A natural wax obtained from the leaves and leaf buds of the Brazilian Wax Palm, Coperinicia Cerefera. This ingredient adds rigidity and structure.

Acetylated Lanolin Alcohol - The acetyl ester of lanolin alcohol. This is derived from lanolin, a by-product of the wool industry. This is a very good conditioner for dry, chapped lips.

Mineral Oil - A refined liquid obtained from petroleum. This ingredient adds emolliency to the lips.

Hydrogenated Soy Glycerides - This is the end product of a reaction using soybean oil. This ingredient adds structure and rigidity to the product. Also, it provides conditioning for dry, chapped lips.
Bonne Bell does NOT test on animals which is really important. Any brands/products that tests on animals are violating the rights of these living things just so because they are animals. Its inhuman! And Lip Smackers are Paraben free which is good.

For more details about Lip Smackers please check out their website: http://www.lipsmacker.com/index.php

Check out the Bonne Bell Website for the company's background:

This is great for this holiday season to give as gift to your girlfriends. Not expensive at all. Very cute packaging and totally awesome product! Full range of flavors that you can choose from and basically they are just so fabulously cute!!!

So here's an option for you to get for your girlfriends this season. Happy Holidays!!!

OCTOBER HAUL pt.ll

Hey Candies!!

MAC RUSSIAN RED & CHATTERBOX
This is another addition  to my October hauls.. Yep. I went shopping ytd and I ended up with all this new babies! The let time I checked with MAC they were out of Chatterbox so I was really glad they have it ytd. Anyways, it's been a long time since I've shopped at Sephora and I was happy to see that they finally have Make-Up forever, benefit & Bare Essential now. So I guess I gotta save more $$$ now for new toys! My current obsession.

Anyhows, I don't really wear red lip pies but idk, ytd I just told the sales person to give me the reddest matte lipstick they have. She gave me 2 choices and I got this Russian Red which is damn smoking hot! I still find myself looking so weird in red lipstick.. Seriously.. Limme give you an example photo.
Please excuse the make-up. I just got home and I just gotta try the Russian Red. It intrigued me a lot. You see, I love wearing either Pinks or Neutral colors for lippies. So Reds are very new to me. Haha.. How?

I also bought a beauty buffer sponge which I've heard is very good. So today I'm gonna try it out. Bought BodyShop's Extra Virgin Minerals Powder Foundation too. I've yet to try it out too. Most probably end of this month I'm gonna replenish my Bobby Brown powder foundation I just had to gave it a miss ytd coz if not I'll be damn broke now. lol.. You see, my hobby is kinda pricey. Oh wells..

Sorry I've not been blogging much about beauty stuffs. I've been kinda busy lately. But I assure you, there are loads of BEAUTY FROM NATURE stuffs that I really wanna share. But at the moment, I just wanna share my October Haul..

So yeah... Have a fantastic Saturday lil Monstersss!!!

OCTOBER FAVORITES!!

Hey Lil Monstersss!!!

So I've had my October Haul.. It came in a few days ago! Hahaha... And well, yeah, another happy girl..
You can all get this at SHOPPING-DISTRICT.COM and if you purchase above $50 you'll get one freebie like this Maybelline Shadow Stylist I got it as a freebie.. It's like a highlighter. I've tried the white of that and it was nice. Pretty good as a highlighter..
SLEEK LIP STAIN in PEACHY KEEN
NYX WHITE EYESHADOW BASE
MAYBELLINE SHADOW STYLIST in VINTAGE CHAMPAGNE.. (freebie!)
EOS LIP BALM in HONEYSUCKLE.. Best Lippie EVERRRR!!! I so love this baby!!!
A swatch of the SLEEK LIP STAIN..
SLEEK LIFE'S A PEACH blush.. It's really cute and since it's so small like it's only 8g it's like half of my palm only!
So last night I was cleaning my brushes. And let me just share with you how I thoroughly clean my brushes.. Ofcourse there's no right or wrong when it comes to brush cleaning. Everyone have different styles of brush cleaning. I just wanna share mine.

I start off by getting a clean plate or plastic container, whichever is available, then I would pour in EVOO and I am using an organic one & about 2 squirts of Anti-bacterial soap. I don't really measure, I like to estimate.. Oh well...
Misture of Organic EVOO & Anti-bacterial soap
a sample of my very dirty foundation brush... eowwww..
dip the brush onto the mixture and then on your palm start sweeping the brush in a circular motion. This is applicable to all the brushes..
sparkling clean!
To keep your brush's shape, I use this BRUSH GUARD which I purchased from COASTALSCENTS.COM
As you can see it has holes in it so the brushes can breathe too. Air circulation is very important. And it's stretchable!
Kabuki will retain it's firmness in shape and yet it's soft to use!!
Safe and sound.. Brushes from MAC from their TARTAN COLLECTION.
lastly, let the brushes air dry. Place them in a container standing so the water would not go to the brush's ferrule.
After the first oil & soap cleansing, I would do a second one but this time using a gentle soap this is just to take out the oil on the brushes. We don't want oily brushes now do we?? Haha.. Same, on the palm do a circular motion sweeping of the brushes and then rinse with water.

Take a clean cloth or a kitchen napkin and blot those excess water.. And then using my brush guard, shape and slip the brush in. Dry, bristle down in a cup.

The Brush Guard is a new way to protect the vulnerable bristles of your powder brushes. It is a stretchable, breathable tube which slides over a brush handle onto the bristles. Select the size that fits snugly over your brush's ferrule (the metal part) and will not slide back nor crush the bristles. Get yours now at www.coastalscents.com.

Have a great Sunday Candies!!

Much Love,
Ivy

MY KIND OF FUN

Hey Candies!!

It's been a while yeah? Sorry. I've been busy and I've just got so many things to do. Anyhows, I've just finished ordering online another beauty haul. EOS lip balm, Sleek Pout Paint & blush on and lastly NYX eyeshadow base. Should be arriving next week.

On some certain days, when boredom strikes and net surfing is just too plain boring, I grab my make-up case and start painting and having fun. I know. I paint my face just for fun and after I'm done, take some snaps, and then wipe it off. Lol.. My kind of idea of having fun. Being a girl is kinda expensive too yeah?!
Geisha Inspired
Kiwi Fresh
Rio Carnival
Blue Lagoon
Well, I had fun. But of course this is not my daily make-up. I certainly can't be wearing this to work you know. The Geisha Inspired is a wee bit extreme. I like the Rio Carnival, it's pretty cute!! Next is the Kiwi Fresh which is really nice!

I used the UD Primer Potion. Eye shadows were all from Coastal Scents Original 88 except for the Rio Carnival look which is from the Sleek Curacao Palette. And of course falsies for a little enhancement.

Hope you lil Monstersss liked it. Till next time! Byes!

A lil bit of..

Hi!

BB will be on his ICT for the next 3 weeks.. Sure I'll miss but I think it's great to be apart from him for a while. At least we'll miss each other rather than seeing everyday. It's a gloomy day today, well, once in a while it tends to get gloomy as it's the monsoon season thus people tend to get sick. I've recovered from my flu and earlier I just had a pint of ice cream. A great day to look forward tomorrow. Spending the day with my bestfriend. Miss her alot!

Alright. That's it for now. Byes!
